Paver patios and hardscaping in Lolo

Hardscaping for homes around the junction of US 93 and US 12, from creekside lots to properties on the benches above town.

Lolo is an unincorporated community and census-designated place about 10 miles southwest of Missoula. It had 4,399 residents at the 2020 census, up from 3,892 in 2010. Lolo Creek meets the Bitterroot River here, and US 93 and US 12 cross in town, with US 12 heading west toward Lolo Pass. Lewis and Clark camped nearby, at what is now Travelers' Rest State Park, in 1805 and 1806.

What do Lolo homeowners ask for?

  • Terraced patios and low walls on lots that slope toward the creek or the highway
  • Gas fire features that work through a dry summer
  • Walkways and steps from the driveway up to the front door
  • Repairs to older patios that have settled or lost their edges

Fire season shapes the plan

The 2017 Lolo Peak Fire burned thousands of acres southwest of town and closed US 12, and residents here watch fire danger closely every August. Countywide burning typically closes in midsummer, and in August 2026 Stage 2 restrictions barred campfires while still allowing propane and LPG devices that turn on and off. A gas fire pit is the more usable choice in that setting. Around the house, a paver patio also gives you a strip of hard, non-burning ground next to the walls instead of bark mulch.

Permits and floodplain

Lolo is outside Missoula city limits, so building permits go through the Missoula County Building Division and floodplain permits through the county floodplain administrator. Lots near Lolo Creek or the Bitterroot should be checked against the county's floodplain map before grading begins.
